FAQ's

  1. Is my family safe on the Internet?
Because we're committed to safe surfing, Telepak.net has teamed up with one of the Internet's best filtering options available called Net Nanny. Designed to help you protect certain viewers from the objectional material available on the Internet as well as provide security for your personal information, Net Nanny can be purchased and downloaded at any time for a low one-time fee. For more information, visit the Net Nanny site, or contact Customer Care at 1.877.TELEPAK.

  2. Can I set-up my own personal Web page with Telepak.net?
With Telepak.net service, 5MB of free Web space storage is available upon request per subscriber and can be used for a personal or non-commercial Web page. To request this no-cost feature, call customer support toll-FREE at 1.877 TELEPAK or email support@telepak.net.

  3. What browser is used with Telepak.net service?
For the sharpest graphics and highest screen resolution, we recommend you use Microsoft Internet Explorer. Otherwise, you can use Netscape Navigator or Netscape Communicator.

  4. Error 403, 404, and 500 de mystified.
The most common error messages: 403, 404, and 500 and what they mean:
    Error 403
This means that the owner of the site has turned off permissions for either that page or its parent directory.

    Error 404
This means that the URL as you've typed in doesn't exist. Check the spelling and try again, but be aware that people take pages down all the time on the Internet. If you're pretty sure that the page is there, contact the owner of the site about the 404 error you received.

    Error 500
This means that there was a script running, like a CGI script, that didn't work correctly. You can't fix it yourself, and you can't move past it, but you may be able to let the author know that it's broken.

  5. "Server has no DNS Entry"
What this means: It could mean a couple of things. First of all, does it happen for only one site, or does it happen for every site you go to?

If it only happens at one site, there's a good chance that the server you're trying to access is down. You should double check how you spelled the URL, and if it looks right, try back at that site later. It may be experiencing some technical difficulties or maintenance. Try going to another site to make sure that you're not getting that error message at all web sites.

If it happens at all sites you visit, check to make sure you're typing the URLs in the correct format. The correct format is: http://some.domain.com/

Simply typing something like "Oranges" in the Address: or Location: field won't bring up the site you're looking for. (If you're not sure what exact site you're looking for, try going to a search engine like www.yahoo.com or www.excite.com. You can also click on the "Search" button or tab on your web browser to search for something on the Internet.)

After you've checked how you're typing the URLs, and you're still not getting anywhere on the net, you can troubleshoot further by trying to check your email. If the email client can't find the mail server:

    1. Make sure you're connected to Telepak. You have to be connected to Telepak using your modem in order to download any information from the Net, be it in the form of email or web pages. If you're not connected, dial up to Telepak and try it again.
    2. If you have been connected all this time to Telepak, and still nothing worked, disconnect and check the settings in your dialer. You can find help for Macintosh, Win95, Windows 3.1, and NT 4.0 dialers.
    3. Try dialing in again after you've checked your dialer.
    4. If you aren't able to solve the problem with these steps, please contact Technical Support. We'll be happy to help you.

  6. What is URL?
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator; sometimes you'll hear that it stands for Universal Resource Locator--it doesn't really matter. Every file on the Internet has a URL. The URL tells you where the file is and what kind of application you can use to get it. You can think of a file's URL as being like a library book's call number. It gives you information about what kind of file it is, and where you can find it.

For example, the URL for our Web site is www.telepak.net. The URL for the page you're currently viewing is:

    http://www.telepak.net/support/faq_web.php

Like a call number, a URL has specific parts, each of which says something about the file. The first part tells the protocol you use to access the file. The second part tells the file's location.

  7. Security alerts
When you receive a "Security Alert" dialog box, it means that your browser is set up to tell you when you're downloading information from a site without a security certificate. You maybe thinking, "Does this mean that I can be hacked?"

    Generally, no.

If you're on a site that is "insecure," it's okay to read all the info. No sneaky hacker is going to access your computer while you're reading stuff online. What you shouldn't do is give out credit card information--or other private information--on a site that you're not sure is secure.

Most secure sites will display a "padlock" icon or other symbol that indicates that information you submit is transmitted securely.

  8. What is DNS?
If your radio is plugged in to the wall socket, but does not have an antenna, you might not be able to pick up any radio stations. A DNS (Domain Name Service) number is similar to a radio antenna for your computer. Dialing up to Telepak.net is like "plugging in" your computer to the Internet. But it is the DNS number (the "antenna") that allows you to actually tune-in and do the things you like to do online.

  9. 9. What is ISDN?
Operating at speeds of up to more than four times faster than a 28.8bps dial-up modem (and twice as fast as the 56K), an ISDN line is an "all-digital" way to access the Internet, offering dramatic increases in the speeds of data and document transfer.
